Social League Singles Merit Finalists 2019 (L-R) Ian Christopherson, Andy Mailer, Peter Tomlinson, Andrea Ainley
The Social League Singles Merit was an all MBC affair with Andy Mailer, Ian Christopherson, Peter Tomlinson and Andrea Ainley all qualifying for the final 4. On a very rough Wadsley House the first Semi Final saw Peter Tomlinson come through 21-12 against Andrea Ainley, and the second Semi Final saw Andy Mailer winning 21-12 against Ian Christopherson.
The Final saw Peter take hold of the game and held a steady lead over Andy, but not one for giving up Andy started a fight back that saw him come over the line in a 21-20 finish. Some decent bowling by all on a very tough bumpy surface. Well Done Andy.

The Charles Needham doubles was run at Hollinsend on Sunday 11th August, MBC was represented by Andrea Ainley & Richard Moore and Liz Burkhill & Phil Holden. Liz and Phil played well throughout the day and saw themselves progress through to the Quarter Finals where they were pipped over the line by Joanne Clarke & Matt Bower in a good game. Andrea & Richard came through the first 2 games comfortably to set up a Semi-Final with Joanne Clarke & Matt Bower, the game was closely contested through to 12 across when the MBC pair took control of the game and run out to progress to the final. The Final saw them play Denise Renkel & Dave Doman, Denise & Dave took an early lead going 10-4 up, Andrea & Richard managed to get back into the game and a few single scoring ends saw them right back in it. A few ends down the line and the MBC pair were just behind at 14-12 when a good 4 gave them the opportunity to take control of the game, the chance was seized and the pair ran out 21-14 winners to retain the title they had won last year. This win saw them hold the title for 3 out of the last 4 years which is a fantastic achievement for them both.

The ladies finals day was first up for MBC with Kerry Brown and Andrea Ainley in the final 8. No easy games at this stage of the competition, Kerry’s first game against fellow S.Yorkshire county player Linda Hawksworth, Kerry coming through 21-14 to progress to the semis. Andrea had a tough game again with a fellow S.Yorkshire county player in Melanie Saville-Fearn, Andrea coming through 21-20 in a tight game. Next up in the semi’s for Kerry was last years winner Debbie Whitworth, Kerry took an early lead and came through with a 21-15 victory to move through to the final. In the other Semi Andrea played Jane Richardson and flew into an early 18-1 lead and finished the game with a 21-3 victory to set up the all MBC final. The final for Kerry would be her 11th appearance in the comp at this stage having won it on 6 previous occasions, for Andrea this would be her first appearance in a final at the civics. Gents Civics Winner 2019 – Dillon Christopherson
On to the Gents event now, and MBC had 5 players in the last 16 of the men’s draw. Jack Clarke, Dillon Christopherson, Andrew Whitaker, Paul Bailey & Ian Christopherson all in the mix at the start of the day. First up for MBC was Andrew Whitaker playing Jon Sneddon, a tightly contested game with some fantastic bowls from the pair with Jon coming through 21-20. Paul Bailey took on Paul Wildgoose coming through with a 21-13 win, Ian Christopherson played Sean Jackson with Ian losing out 21-13. Dillon’s first game against another up and coming junior in Callum Jeffrey was nip and tuck until the halfway mark with Dillon then taking control of the game and coming through 21-13, in the last of the 1st round Jack Clarke took on Mark Jackson and came through with a 21-13 victory. The Quarter Finals threw up a good test for Dillon Christopherson who took on a fellow MBC player in Jack Clarke. In a close game that was well contested by both Dillon came through with a 21-17 victory to move through to the Semi Finals, in the other Quarter Final Paul Bailey played Jon Sneddon with Paul losing 21-5. The Semi Final saw Dillon take on a previous winner in Peter Worfolk, a game that saw Dillon take control from the word go. He bowled consistently well and maintained his composure at crucial times to come through with a 21-14 win to move to the Final to play Jon Sneddon, who came through his Semi Final with Steve Marshall 21-11. In the Final Dillon raced into an 18-6 lead, leading well to his own block and maintaining the consistency he had shown in the previous rounds, never to be written off however, Jon started the fightback, found a few leads and ended up 20-19 up. The final end saw Jon lead a 6 inch bowl but Dillon came in with a bowl inside and propped the lead out, Jon’s next bowl was underneath and no where to be a bother in the end, Dillon bowled a superb last bowl that saw him play inside his first bowl to sit Jon’s bowl out of the end completely and claimed 2 for game. Dillon bowled well all day and kept his cool at critical moments – a fully deserved winner of this years comp. Well done Dillon.

Social League Doubles Merit
The social league doubles merit was a particularly strong and successful competition for MBC with all Four pairs in the finals coming from the club. The final became a Father & Son event with Christopherson & Tomlinson Snr playing Christopherson & Tomlinson Jr in the final. The young guns gave the seniors a run for their money throughout the final, but experience prevailed as Ian & Pete edged over the line 21-14 in the final. Well done to all involved.

It is with a heavy heart that MBC announce the passing of Margo Sinclair. She died peacefully last night surrounded by her family. Margo will always have a place in our hearts and will be fondly remembered for her love of bowls and MBC. She always put her heart and soul into every game and put just as much into the social aspect of the game too which gained her many close friends. Her Scottish banter and her shouting of “Simdgeon” or ” A wee Smidgeon” will be forever missed around the green. Further details of funeral arrangements will be shared once known. But for now – rest easy Margo our dear friend xx
