Apologies it’s been a while since we have updated you with any news but here are some recent events to inform you about.
Firstly many congratulations to Jack Clarke, Andy Sorsby and Chris Kelly who successfully defended their South Yorkshire Triples title for an incredible 3rd time in a row. A wonderful achievement on a superb tricky Carlton Bowling Club in Barnsley!
Jack and Andy were also worthy winners once more, of the South Yorkshire Gents Pairs, again on a great tricky green in Barnsley at Barnsley Central.
In an all MBC final, Andy Whittaker was victorious in the South Yorkshire Handicap at an excellent Denaby, against team mate Ian Christopherson. Well done and congratulations to Bliv!
MBC ‘A’ were proud winners once more of the Sheffield Parks Ibbotson Doubles trophy against a very capable Catcliffe team at Laycocks. Catcliffe battled all the way as expected, and the victory was hard earned by MBC on a challenging and difficult green. Skipper Andy Sorsby proudly holds the prestigious trophy and is pictured with the rest of the team and competition sponsor Mike Ibbotson. Worth a mention here that the Ibbotson family have been sponsoring this competition for an amazing 90 years! Started by Mike’s Grandfather, this is believed to be the longest running continuous sponsorship in sport in the UK and potentially further afield.
In a further MBC success, victors in the Sheffield Parks Ladies Doubles Merit at Crookesmoor were Andrea Ainley and Lisa Christopherson. As we know, Andrea is a seasoned and successful competition bowler but this was Lisa’s first competition success! Well done Ladies! Unfortunately we don’t have a photo of them to share with you but if one is forthcoming we’ll share it with you.

On behalf of Paul and the family, details as follows for Gordon Schumacher’s funeral:
Would you possibly be able to post this on my behalf so that everyone in the group can see it as I don’t want anyone to miss it who may want to come. It’s to take place at Hutcliffe Wood on May 17th at 11am. Thank you in advance for your help.
An AGM has been called for Shareholders and Members to attend on the above date, to sign off accounts for 2019 & 2020. Due to COVID-19 a maximum of only 30 people are allowed in the Clubhouse. So Members wishing to attend should let us know in advance so we have an idea of numbers. Anyone wishing to have an item of business placed on the agenda must place it in writing or via email to the Secretary as soon as possible, officially 14 days prior to the meeting but we can be flexible up to 7 days prior. Please spread the word for those not on Internet or Facebook.
Subject to any change in the Government’s lockdown easing roadmap, we are planning to re-open again on Monday 17th May! We will more than likely be opening on the same footing as we closed with, so signing in / QR scanning, table service, masks when moving around, rule of six, as it was back in October. We will clarify this as we get more guidance from the next Government announcement.
The following initial opening times will apply:
Monday to Thursday: 7pm to 10pm last orders
Friday: 7pm to 10:30pm last orders
Saturday: 1pm to 10:30pm last orders
Sunday: 2pm to 10pm last orders
We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again! Please spread the word for those not on the internet or Facebook.
During the recent work at MBC we found this old hand painted sign which is the same as the old club emblem. For a bit of fun, would you like to see this piece of MBC history restored and put up somewhere around the club? If so where? Answer as a comment below please for consideration!
During the recent cold weather and issues we were having with the club heating we found that the lowered ceiling in the Snooker Room had moved with the ceiling tiles hanging down. This has all now been successfully re-secured, it did offer the lucky few the chance to see the hidden architectural gem of the original domed ceiling complete with timber beams. Hopefully one day in the future we might be able to restore this original feature, but there’s a few jobs on the to do list first!
We’ve also had some considerable work done with the heating systems this winter, predominantly on the snooker room circuit. During the regular security and systems checks we noticed the snooker room circuit was really struggling to get warm, and the building was getting progressively colder. Working with Meersbrook & Heeley based heating experts, Osborne UK Ltd, we have flushed and serviced the system, replaced 2 blocked and knackered radiators, and set up each radiator in turn to get the necessary flow on the return leg of the system. As Jack, Pete and myself can testify, this doesn’t tell anywhere near the whole story of the work that’s gone into investigating how the system works, removing all the bench seating etc to get at rad’s & pipework!
Many thanks to Paul & Steve Osborne and all their team for their hard work. We got there in the end!
We have recently had some great work done on the green, carried out by Paul Bradley and his amazing Verti-Drainer machine! This should add to all the work done last year by improving root growth and drainage on the green. Gary & Jack had some core soil samples taken at the back end of last year, and we’ve now got a tailored comprehensive treatment programme based on this. With the many thousands of 8″ holes Paul has now put in the green, these treatments should be able to get to where we need them to improve the grasses ability to take up all these key nutrients. Fingers crossed we’ll all be able to enjoy the benefits soon!
