MBC ROUND UP – Week Ending 10/04/2022

Last Monday saw the Social League get underway with an impressive start to the new
season for our A Team who beat Wadsley House A at home in the A Division 8-0. Captain ‘Chaos’ Clark skippered the side to an impressive first victory. Debutant Dave ‘Great Gambini Jnr’ Gamban got off to an impressive start in the doubles with Badge, with Carling Darling carrying ‘Peg Leg’ Clarke through another victory in the other doubles game. ‘Chaos’ says all the singles were decidedly average!

Meanwhile after relegation to the B Division, our B Team started their season with a 4-4
draw away at Norfolk Park. The team were grateful for big wins from Scott Claxton in the
singles and Mel & Ian Hobson in the doubles to ensure the aggregate win, ensuring a share
of the points against a very tricky opposition who played well on the night.
This week sees the B Team at home on Monday vs Herdings, whilst the A Team faces a tricky fixture
away match at Catcliffe; both games starting at 6.00pm.

Tuesday 12th April sees the start of the Sheffield & Hallamshire League. Our A Team face a
challenging start facing Bradfield A away, with our new look B Team at home to Stocksbridge
Friendship.

The Vets Team play their first Wednesday Union Street Cup fixture on Wednesday 13th April,
starting at 1.30pm away at Ridgeway. They’ll be fit and ready to go after two impressive
games in the Presto Doubles, in which they beat Mosborough MW A at home & Richmond
Park away both to the same 10-0 score line. This coming Friday they will be hoping for a
repeat performance at home to Nether Edge A, starting at 1.30pm.

Finally, this week sees the start to the Parks Saturday League for our club, which sees two home games
on our green. With the A Team away at Maltby in the Jackson League, our B Team takes on
Bradfield B at 1.30pm in the Telegraph Cup. Following on from that, our C Team hosts
Hollinsend in the Fitzwilliam Shield with a 5.00pm start.
Your support is always welcome!

2022 Club Handicap

Last Saturday saw the first of this season’s Club Comps played at MBC, which saw a new name added
to the Handicap Trophy during a good days bowling. A good turnout ensured that the event was
competitive from the start.

Quarter-Final Results:
Neil Fletcher 21 Mel Hobson 20
Mick Swift 21 Phil Holden 16
Donna Wainwright 21 Yvonne Hamilton 13
Dillon Christopherson 21 Dean Missere 17

Semi-Finals: Mick Swift eventually got the better of Neil Fletcher 21-16, which at one point was hard to predict which way the game would go. In a closely fought battle, Donna Wainwright squeezed past Dillon
Christopherson in a great game, Donna winning the match 21-19.

Final: Donna Wainwright played a superb game to which despite the best efforts of Mick Swift, he simply
couldn’t match to see Donna win her first competition; the first of many based on this performance
winning the final 21-10 rounding off an enjoyable day of bowling.

This week at MBC – w/c 26th March

Nearly the start of the bowling season!! Fingers crossed for some good weather this week to get some good practise in for next week!

Good Friday Fun Day

Join us for a day of bowls competition as well as other mini games to start the season off with a bang. Use the day for practise on the green or just a social day with friends to start the bowling summer.

The games start at 10am, and over the day there will be:

  • a 32-man bowling handicap tournament
  • a darts competition
  • a pool competition
  • a cards game
  • a surprise game

Refreshments & hot food will be served all day, as well as the bar opening at 11am. Come along and have some fun. just pray for the sun! For any more information, contact Mel Hobson or Adam Blackwell, or visit the Good Friday Fun Day page.

Tidy-Up / Maintenance Day

We’re just looking for a few spare pairs of hands to help get the green and the surrounding paths tidy ready for the season. We won’t need lots of people, but the more we get the quicker we’ll get it done! Copious amounts of free tea, coffee and biscuits for all helpers!

Burkhill Shield

On Sunday 1st April, MBC will host the first annual ‘Burkhill Shield’, in memory of Steve Burkhill. Steve was a very well respected and valued member of our club, and held various positions within MBC. He sadly died very suddenly at the end of 2016, at the age of 58, and is missed by all.

Bowling starts at 9.30am, with hot food available all day. The bar will also open at 11am. The competition is approved by SYCGBA.

This week at MBC – w/c 19th March

Whilst not strictly an MBC event, Sunday 25th March is the day that MBC A team travel to Leyland to play in the World Club Championships at Fox Lane!

We’re trying to organise as much support for the team as possible on the day at Fox Lane. If anybody is planning on attending, please contact Adam Blackwell know as we may be able to share lifts, allowing people who would otherwise struggle to attend the event to grab a spare seat and make the trip over to Preston.

If you haven’t already seen it, a copy of the draw can be downloaded here: World Club Championship Draw 2018.

NOTE: Matches scheduled for Sunday 18th March have been postponed due to the snow! These matches will now be played on Sunday 15th April, and the final delayed a week to Sunday 22nd April.

This week at MBC

This thread will show details of what is happening at MBC, both in the clubhouse as well as on the bowling green, every week over the coming bowls season. The new notice board outside the main door to the club will also have the same information on.

By making people more aware of all the different events that MBC host, we are hoping to make the club a more accessible, sociable place for all members, friends and family, as well as opposing teams and other guests. If there is anything else you want to see on this thread and the board on the club, or have any other suggestions for changes we are making to the club, please contact Adam Blackwell.
